What we will explore together
Coil construction is one of the oldest methods of forming pottery around the world for thousands of years. It is a slow, meditative and rhythmic process that gives you complete control over every curve and height of your work. While other methods rely on rotation, coiling allows you to build your piece layer by layer, encouraging a calm and focused creative flow that lets you pause and adjust as you go.
At Zolta, we invite you to follow your own design path. Whether you prefer clean, modern lines or more natural, organic shapes, this technique is perfect for experimenting with your own style, ensuring that the final result is a one-of-a-kind reflection of your own hands and imagination.
To help you work the clay with precision and avoid accidental marks on the surface of your sculpture, we recommend arriving with short-trimmed nails.
Good to Know
In this workshop, you have the creative freedom to decide what your clay will become, whether you wish to craft a functional cup, a bowl, a plate, or a small sculpture, the choice is completely yours. Under the guidance of our experienced artists, you will learn to stack, blend, and refine each layer to ensure your design is both strong and expressive. The process concludes with surface refinement, where you can choose to leave the coiled texture visible as a rhythmic design or smooth the walls to a flawless finish.
Once your session is complete. We handle the delicate transition from earth to art: a 960°C bisque firing, followed by a dip in transparent stoneware glaze, and a final 1200°C glaze firing. This high-heat "vitrification" ensures your piece isn't just beautiful, but food-safe, waterproof, and built to last.
Patience is Part of the Process! Good things take time. Due to the drying and firing cycles, your work will be ready for pickup in 3 to 4 weeks.
One piece is included in your workshop fee; Once you have mastered the technique, we invite you to book an Open Studio session. It is the perfect opportunity to make more at your own pace.
Want to Finish the Story Yourself and add the final touch? We highly recommend our Glazing Workshops for beginners, or our Open Studio for those experienced with glaze application. Here, you can decorate your pieces with ceramic paints and apply a protective transparent glaze. A selection of premium, ready-made glazes is also available for purchase at the studio to further customise your creations.

Making ceramics, The full journey.
At Zolta, we honor the slow, meditative rhythm required to transform raw earth into sculptural art. The journey begins with the manual manipulation of clay in its most malleable state, pinching, coiling, or slab-building to capture organic form and spatial movement. Once the structure is realized, the sculpture must rest, drying slowly under cover for several days to reach the leather-hard stage. This controlled drying period is essential; the clay must be firm enough to support its own weight, yet carvable enough to allow us to refine the silhouette and etch fine details with precision.
The patience continues for another week as the piece reaches the bone-dry stage, where every trace of atmospheric moisture must evaporate to ensure the sculpture’s integrity in the heat. Only then is it ready for its first transformation: a two-day kiln cycle for the bisque firing at 960°C, which creates a durable, porous canvas. After the careful application of glazes or oxides, the final act occurs during the glaze firing, a second two-day cycle reaching 1200°C. This intense heat vitrifies the stoneware, fusing minerals into a permanent, stone-like finish. From raw earth to a finished sculpture, the three-to-four-week process is a testament to the beauty of patience, heat, and focused intent.
